Thankfully, you’ll find Magic Wells throughout the world to recover this, but not often enough to use it all freely.ĭefeating enemies causes them to drop their Souls, of different color, and you can absorb them by holding the B Button. Because it’s so powerful, it’ll take some Magic from your meter so use it sparingly as you may need it to survive a tough fight later on. Each weapon has it’s own unique attack and each is powerful. Other than your basic attacks, each weapon you get has a Magic Attack assigned to it. You eventually get different weapons and you can swap between them with the ZL and ZR buttons. Instead, i just manually ran around unlocked and fought that way as you still soft lock when attacking. It’s also not reliably pulled off and I don’t think I ever used it safely. This might sound useful but it’s so short of a sidestep that it isn’t useful. If you hold the R Button you’ll lock on to the closest enemy and this will allow you to do a sidestep moving the left stick left and right.

As said, it’s pretty simple you walk around and slash at the enemies with the Y button and block attacks with the L button. As you move around, you examine objects with the A Button and find items in the environment to progress through the map.Īs for the fighting, it’s a very simple system but it really works. Thankfully, this is rarely a big deal in a fight, though it does sometimes happen. It keeps you moving forward despite the camera change, but you are always going to have to readjust yourself making some sudden changes really mess you up. It’s very odd at first and is still annoying thanks to the fact that the camera change messes with your movement. You control Samanosuke better than you would Jill or Chris, as you control him in 3D rather than the tank controls of Resident Evil, though you can still move this way with the D-Pad, but the camera is still the same style of fixed camera. The gameplay is probably the weirdest part of the game and that’s because it’s just Samurai Resident Evil.

It’s weird and old, but it does it’s job and the premise itself is fairly neat, though you can tell they were planning on this becoming a series early. Overall, the plot and writing isn’t offensive. Not sure if this was to make the writer feel off, but I don’t feel it was as it isn’t an isolated thing. Sentences end when you feel they could have went on and the writing is all over the place. Writing during spoken dialogue is typical and inoffensive if a little awkward, but the writing in the game’s notes feels off. The only problem I have with any of the narrative is that the writing is really odd. The story isn’t anything special and rarely gets in the way of the gameplay, but it’s always neat when a game has a real thing to build off of and it works well here. This sets him on his quest to save Yuki and stop an evil dark ritual that the Demons are trying to perform. He fails to save Yuki early on and is on death’s door but before he falls into darkness, he was given power by a clan of Ogres to defeat the Demons and steal their souls.

Or should Capcom have left this one dreaming? This was the perfect opportunity for someone like me, who hasn’t played the game back when it was new, to finally see if this is something we should all care about all from the comfort of my Switch.

This was a shocking move to most but it was a welcome one to people who remembered the game fondly. The franchise of Demons and Samurai laid dormant since it’s last release, Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, back in 2006 but out of nowhere, Capcom announced they were remastering the first game Onimusha: Warlords. One of their more pushed franchises back in the sixth generation was the Onimusha series. 03s, but they were also responsible for some of the most iconic games since the beginning of the 3D Era alone.
